Australians willing to opt for non-detached properties

People are willing to sacrifice their dream of having a detached Australian property if they are faced with financial constraints.
Large, free-standing Australian properties that are close to a central business district are favoured by most people living in the country, however, when real-world constraints are taken into account, this all changes.

A new survey of Sydney and Melbourne residents conducted by the Grattan Institute found that a high number would be willing to sacrifice having a detached property.

It reveals that, when faced with financial constraints, just 48 per cent of people in Melbourne and 41 per cent of those in Sydney would opt for a detached house.

A report on the findings, titled the Housing We'd Choose, claims that there is a shortage of more than 400,000 semi-detached homes and apartments in Sydney and more than 200,000 in Melbourne.

"Construction of new dwellings in the last ten years has not reduced the gap between the housing people say they want and the housing we have," the report reads.

Last month, the Housing Institute Association - JELD-WEN New Home Sales Report revealed that detached house sales decreased in South Australia in April.
