Local councils could easily make property in Australia more affordable, the Property Council of Australia has claimed.
Kathy Mac Dermott, executive director of the Queensland branch of the council, said that many councils are currently making housing unaffordable due to the high infrastructure charges they impose and the lack of sound infrastructure planning.
"The reality is that a number of councils are not delivering their planning and development assessment functions in a timely manner," she added.
Ms Mac Dermott went on to suggest that the Urban Land Development Authority (ULDA) counteracts the inefficiencies of local councils and said to wind back its powers would be "irresponsible".
She concluded that Queensland's government should use the ULDA to "ensure adequate land supply in designated growth areas by 2015".
Earlier this month, John McGrath of McGrath Estate Agents wrote in his blog that the Australian property market will experience strong growth this year.
