Govt 'should re-engage in housing policy reform'

In order for the Australian property shortage to be addressed, the government needs to rethink its housing policy, the Housing Industry Association has claimed.

Australia's government needs to rethink its housing policy to reduce the property shortage that is currently being experienced, an expert has claimed.

Dr Harley Dale, chief economist at the Housing Industry Association, said that the nation is continually under-building, which means that the housing shortage is growing year after year.

He suggested that the government needs to reform its policies in order to allow more Australian property to be built.

"Furthermore, given that new housing is one of the most heavily and inequitably taxed industries in Australia it is essential that the upcoming taxation summit delivers bold and effective policy reform," Dr Dale added.

He did, however, note that the country's labour market is improving and said that renovations activity in 20011/12 would reach $31.3 billion (£19.8 billion).

Earlier this month, the Real Estate Institute of Australia said that policy decision-making processes would be better informed if the Consumer Price Index was produced on a monthly, rather than quarterly, basis.
