A long-term policy to generate Australian homes and assuage the stress on the rental market is required, according to Australia's Green Party.
Responding to Australians for Affordable Housing's (AAH's) statement urging the government to respond to both long-term and short-term problems facing the property market, the Greens called on the upcoming budget to deliver a solution.
Housing spokesperson senator Scott Ludlam said that a shortfall of 493,000 in the supply of available rentals indicated the depth of the issues facing Australian housing and the urgent need for firm policy action.
Mr Ludlam praised the work done by AAH and the Residential Development Council in demarcating the scale of the housing criss.
"The government must heed this warning and make a serious commitment to ensuring every Australian can afford a roof over their head," he concluded.
AAH campaign manager Sarah Toohey argued recently the Labour government needs to "walk and chew gum at the same time" in dealing with Australia's property market.
