Property searches 'doubled in January'

Searches for Australian property increased by 98 per cent in January compared with October of last year, new data has suggested.

The number of people searching for Australian property almost doubled in January, according to the latest figures.

Data published by Find a Property indicates that there was a 98 per cent jump in the number of people hunting property in Australia in January when compared with October.

Samantha Baden, a spokesperson for the organisation, said the data shows the allure of packing up and moving to a sunnier climate is greater than ever at the start of 2011.

She added that Australia's temperate climate and English-speaking culture means it has long been a favoured destination for Brits.

David Kerns, money dealing manager at Moneycorp, advised people planning on making the move to ensure they do their research beforehand to make sure they are aware of the costs of living in the new property's area.

Writing for the Sydney Morning Herald recently, Michael Buxton said that foreign investment in Australian property is "vital for the continued health" of the country's economy and also noted that Australia relies heavily on "imported capital".
