Chermside’s property facelift has gone into overdrive, with some developments nearing completion and others about to start.
While the Chermside Central apartments are near completion, the first stage of Westfield Chermside’s $150 million upgrade has begun and a new residential development is about to start.
The development boom is in line with Brisbane City Council’s local area plan, which designates Chermside as one of four regional centres.
The plan allows for residential and mixed-use buildings, up to eight storeys, to be built in several key areas in the suburb.
Cr Faith Hopkins (Marchant) said the provision for such development had existed in the Chermside local area plan since 1996.
She said little development had taken place previously, although the number of building applications had increased since March last year.
Opalyn Property Group director John Tomarchio said Chermside Central offered modern apartment living without the hustle and bustle of the inner city.
He said the time was right for high-rise developments, reflected in sales in the project.
Position Property’s Steven Franklin, who is marketing the site, said only four units remained ahead of the November opening.
He said most buyers were locals.
Mr Tomarchio said the group would announce the launch of Central Park North, a development in Playfield St, this week.
As well as Chermside Central, mixed-use buildings are taking shape at Gympie and Hamilton roads, and Thomas St.
Both developments include eight-storey buildings incorporating commercial and residential.
The Westfield Chermside development is a massive upgrade to meet the future growth of the area.
The first stage of the project will boost the number of speciality shops from 250 to 350.
An extra 2500 car parks also are planned for the site, increasing its capacity to 6300 spaces.
