Tasmania land owners could benefit from tax changes

Landowners in Tasmania stand to benefit from new Australian taxation plans proposed by the Liberal opposition leader Will Hodgman.
Landowners in Tasmania stand to benefit from new Australian taxation plans proposed by the Liberal opposition leader Will Hodgman.

The reform package will see all 4,700 Tasmanians that are eligible for a tax rebate on land valued at AUS$350,000 (£195,552) benefiting from an extension of the scheme.

A cap on state land tax revenue in 2009-10 has also been proposed, coming into effect after the rebate has been fulfilled.

Mr Hodgman additionally indicated that he is keen to remove land valuations from the process.

The Property Council of Australia has played a role in uniting the business sector over this issue, although the Tasmanian Green Party has yet to present its land tax policy.

Property Council Australia has confirmed that it will continue to lobby parties in an effort to get a similar result in this case.
