A study on zero carbon Australian property has claimed the answer for consumers and investors struggling with soaring energy prices is to build greener homes.
The report was commissioned by Sustainability Victoria and the Cape Paterson Ecovillage and finds that investment in environmentally friendly features could produce savings of up to ten per cent after tax returns every year for the next 20 years.
It also claims that despite the initial outlay of investing in these features, the savings made over a period of time more than offset the cost.
Brendan Condon, director of the Cape Paterson Ecovillage said that in the past the expense of sustainable residential development had been considered too large to make it a viable alternative.
"Our study shows this is no longer the case and smart home buyers can save hundreds of thousands of dollars by investing in an eco-friendly home," he added.
The Cape Paterson Ecovillage is a plan for a sustainable solar-powered community on Australia's Bass Coast, in the state of Victoria.
